Does Your Chikankari Kurta Need an Inner? A Practical Buying Guide
Share
A Chikankari kurta may need an inner, depending on the actual garment and the coverage you prefer. Start with three questions: is it lined, is a separate inner included, and how does your chosen colour look in daylight?
A fabric name alone cannot answer all three. Before ordering, check the product description and photographs—and ask about anything that remains unclear.
First, check what comes with the kurta
A lining is attached inside a garment. A separate inner or slip is worn underneath it. These are different constructions, and either can cover only part of an outfit.
Look for a clear statement such as “inner included” or “attached lining.” Then check whether it covers the body only, includes the sleeves, or stops above the kurta’s hem.
For example, our georgette kurti listing states that a cotton undershirt is included. Check your selected size and colour before ordering, and ask about the inner’s fit and length if these details are not listed.
Do not assume that an inner, trousers or dupatta is included simply because it appears in a styled photograph.
Does modal, cotton or mulmul need an inner?
Check the individual piece rather than choosing by fabric name alone.
Thickness, construction, colour, embroidery placement and lining can all affect how much shows through. A densely embroidered front panel also does not tell you how the back or sleeves will look.
When browsing our malmal collection, read each product’s details separately. One garment’s coverage should not be treated as a promise about another.
The same applies to modal. The Aussie Pure Modal Chikankari Kurti is described as kurti only, with bottoms shown for styling. If coverage is important to your choice, ask about the exact colour you are considering before adding a separate layer.
Choose the inner colour by the effect you want
For a discreet base, try a shade close to your own skin tone. “Nude” is not one universal beige; compare the actual inner against your skin and beneath the kurta.
For a coordinated layered look, try an inner close to the kurta’s colour. A contrasting inner can also be a deliberate styling choice if you enjoy seeing the layers.
With white Chikankari, compare options underneath the garment rather than assuming white is always the least visible choice. Necklines, straps, seams and hems may show differently through the fabric.

Match the neckline and length
Choose an inner whose neckline stays where you want it when you sit, bend and reach. Check the back neckline and armholes too.
If you want coverage through the hip area, a short camisole may not provide it. A longer slip may suit that preference, but its hem should also work with the kurta’s side slits.
Sleeveless inners leave the sleeves uncovered. If you prefer arm coverage, check whether the kurta has lined sleeves or whether a sleeved inner works comfortably beneath it.
You do not need shaping garments to wear Chikankari. Choose the layer that gives you the comfort and coverage you want.
Check the fit of both layers
The kurta and inner each need enough room for movement. A comfortable kurta cannot compensate for an inner that pulls across the bust or hips.
Whether you are choosing size 38, 48 or 54, compare the actual measurements of each piece. The same numeric label does not guarantee identical measurements across two garments.
Try the complete outfit while sitting, walking and lifting your arms. Check for straps slipping, the inner riding up, or either layer bunching beneath the embroidery.
For warmer days, assess how the whole outfit feels together rather than judging the kurta alone.

Make one final daylight check
Try your chosen kurta, inner and bottoms together near a window. Look at the front, back, sides and sleeves, then move away from the mirror and sit down.
If you plan to wear the outfit to an evening event, check it under indoor lighting too. A photograph is useful, but it cannot guarantee how the garment will look in every setting.
Unsure before ordering? Start with one question
You do not need a full set of measurements to begin:
“I’m considering this kurta in [colour]. Does it need an inner, and is one included?”
Use “Help me choose my size” on the product page to start a WhatsApp conversation about the piece you like. You can discuss measurements if they are needed.
You can also ask us about an inner on WhatsApp. Share the product link and your preferred colour so we can discuss the right piece.
